THE AUDIO SYSTEM
The audio system is available in two variants, standard 6 speaker Hi-Fi, and BMW LOGIC7 also referred to as ‘Hi-Fi Professional DSP’, ‘Top Hi-Fi’ or ‘Premium DSP’.
The standard Hi-Fi system has the following configuration:
ASK Module:
– 2 Front Mid Range Speakers and Tweeters
– 2 Rear Deck Mid Range Speakers
– 2 Subwoofer Pre-outs (fed directly to Hi-Fi Amplifier)
Hi-Fi Amplifier:
– 2 Underseat Subwoofers
Summary:
Conventional analogue amplifier, analogue audio is received from the ASK module and amplified for the two subwoofer channels.
Common Failure Modes:
ASK:
– Failure of one or more front or rear deck speaker outputs, usually crackling, distorted or no audio output. This is an ASK related failure.
Hi-Fi Amplifier:
– The subwoofer amplifier is very reliable and rarely suffers any failure symptoms.
The LOGIC7 system has the following configuration:
ASK Module:
– 2 Front Mid Range Speakers and Tweeters
– 2 Rear Deck Mid Range Speakers
LOGIC7 Top Hi-Fi Amplifier:
– 1 Centre Mid Range Dashboard Speaker
– 2 Rear Door Mid Range Speakers
– 2 Underseat Subwoofers
Summary:
Digital amplifier with full DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and 7 channel graphic equaliser. The audio data is received from the ASK (Audio System Controller) via a fibre optic connection, it is decoded, processed to enhance the sound and staging effects before being converted back to analogue and fed to the internal 5 channel amplifier.
Common Failure Modes:
ASK:
– Failure of one or more front or rear deck speaker outputs, usually crackling, distorted or no audio output.
LOGIC7:
– Sub-woofer output failure, resulting in crackling, distorted or no bass output.
– One or more of the three mid range speaker output channels can suffer crackling, distorted or no audio output.
2002-2005 Pre Facelifted ASK UNIT (CD-Player)
2006-2008 Face lifted ASK UNIT (CD-Player)
Standard problems with ASK AUDIO CONTROLLER:
– crackling, static noise from front doors and rear deck speakers. No sound at all. Therefore it will affect all service sounds like:
-PDC (parking sensors) not beeping, no NAVI guide voice, door chimes, warning sounds etc.
– in some cases ask unit controller is not responding to fibre optic signals causing MOST fibre optic bus failure. But it does not mean the problem is your ask unit or Logic 7 amp, it could be any device in the MOST BUS network, to troubleshoot and find out which module is causing failure I will cover in details in my next post, stay tuned.

How to remove ASK CD PLAYER UNIT?? EASY!
LOGIC 7 TOP HIFI AMPLIFIER 2002-2008
FIRST GENERATION BAD DESIGN L7 AMPLIFIER 2001-2006:\
NOT ALWAYS FIXABLE…. 50% SUCCESS RATE.
GOOD AMPLIFIER DESIGN AFTER 2006. 4 CLIPS:
VERY GOOD SUCCESS RATE ABOUT 90%
BMW Logic7 amplifier is a fiber optic controlled amplifier with FIBRE OPTIC CONTROLLER AND HIGH SPEED 24 BIT DSP PROCESSOR, therefore you can not install regular aftermarket amp. It produces 5 channels:
-sub woofers under front seats 8″ shallow type
-rear doors
-front center speaker in the dash
Any problems with those speakers are related to the AMP and have nothing to do with the speakers most of the times, but sometimes sub woofers get flooded and therefore can be bad, causing amplifier failure. Speakers can be easily tested: it should show about resistance=4 Ohms.
Main problem is that modules inside the amplifier overheat and die, the only way to rebuild i is to replace it, unfortunately BMW or Becker made it impossible due to non standard mini modules. we redesigned the entire system and since 2009 we did not have any returns.
Please do not even think that capacitors went bad, it never happened, but you can always check them if they are ok, before replacing it (makes sense?). But since 2009 and ~280 amps fixed none of them had bad caps.
Another problem with Logic7 amps is that when it does not sound right, those burnt modules overheat entire amplifier causing Logic board to fail, so if your amp isn’t doing well its better not to use it and fix it ASAP.
In most of the cases, APPLIES TO CARS BEFORE 2004 (AFTER 2004 THEY CHANGED SOFTWARE AND SETTINGS ARE ADJUSTABLE EVEN WITHOUT ANY AMPLIFIER CONNECTED!) if Logic7 level AND EQ SETTINGS ARE adjustable in the menu (entertainment), 
it means that logic board is still okay and it is fixable, but if you don’t have any sound, or if its cutting in and out, it means that Logic7 amplifier is causing MOST bus failure, and lots of things are not working in your IDRIVE:
-navigation isn’t working at all.
-is not showing consumption and other things.
-cd changer making noise trying to find a CD.

if your car facelifted 2006 and up, its 99% guaranteed its fixable.
before 2005 logic7 amplifiers are not always fixable, so if you have cutting in and out, or it plays only from front speakers and Logic7 level is not adjustable, most likely we cannot help, but you can still bypass it and install standard amp, though it will not sound like original one, though much cheaper.

NOTE: If you don’t have any sound and cannot see NAVI, FM stations, CD tracks changing or playing, it means you have at least one device failure in the MOST network and you have to find out which one (most common are: NAVI, SVS, CD changer, ASK, L7, FM tuner) is causing this problem, i will be describing it in my next post.

first of all you need to make sure MOST bus is not interrupted. If Logic7 level in the menu is adjustable,
it means MOST bus is okay, but in your case it sounds like you’ve been driving for a while with overheating amp. Is Logic 7 level adjustable? Navi works?

I have a question (you cover some of the answer here), my amp went bad -bad board and I had to find a new one, actually, I have tried four new ones (used) amps and they all sound bad, meaning, there seems to be too much bass even with the settings flat. There’s no distortion or crackling just excess bass and everything in the car works, just can’t seem to get the sound right.
You mention on the article that modules go bad, does this mean all amps I’ve tried could be bad? and does that mean that I would need to have the one I have, fixed, to get it to control the sound better?

No sound, no screen, it might come on for 20 min every other week or so. No door chimes every once in a while the seat belt chime will work.

Hello. I have sound…only the rear speakers by the rear windshield or the rear door speakers. Sometimes the front speakers come on and then cut off. Sometimes the door chimes sound amd tgen dont. I have not yet seen sny adjustable settings for the L7 amp on the idrive.i have heard a crackling soind from the other speakers. Gps is unhooked via a fiber optic bus. I do have sound but no subs and fronts.
according to what you are saying you have both issues: ask unit and Logic 7 amp. Make sure you have Logic7 sound system, because if you cannot find it in the menu- most likely you dont have it or you didnt find.
but if you dont have L7, those small amps almost never die and susb should work.

my problem is as following: gradually i lost my bass, it kept on cutting off until it completely went away. When it was cutting off it would also restart the i-Drive, however since the bass is gone for good no more system restarting. Now i get sound only from front speakers and the rear ones on the shelf below the rear windscreen. My L7 adjustments work just fine on the i-Drive, but no sound from the subs.
Does this mean is the L7 amp. faulty?

I have a 2002 BMW 745li with logic 7. Navigation is working, Voice command is working, CD player is working, On Board Computer is working, Logic 7 is working but CD changer does not work. The problem that I have is the drivers side speakers work but are weak, crack sometimes and drivers side subwoofer is not working. Passenger side speakers work fine. However CD changer has not worked for months and radio was working just fine until recently. Can you tell me what the problem may be? Your wisdom is greatly appreciated.

my 2002 745 cassette stereo works fine for 10 sometimes 20 minutes until the back speakers start to pop and then it turns off . the L7 adjusting and navigation door chimes work but i can barely hear the ask unit working and the cd changer does not work it makes the the noise of it trying to read the cd but ejects the cartridge after a minute of trying.

Have 2008 bmw li and radio crackles and cuts out then goes back on at half the volume or turns off completely. NAV system was out too but dealer fixed bad disk under warranty.
Now they’re saying they don’t know what’s wrong with radio and it’s “unrepairable” !?!?!? Ideas??

I think that my amp in my 2006 750 Li is the problem, based on everything that I have read. I have sound in all of the speakers. My radio, nav, sirius, cd, dvd, and 6 disc changers work with no problem. However, I have NO bass as all. There is bass, but not like the base from the amp kicking in. I’ve adjusted all levels, played with the logic 7 and still no major bass. There was a popping/cracking sound when I would start up my car, but since the amp (and I am assuming that it is the amp) went out, the popping noise has stopped. If it is repairable, I’d definitely like to have it repaired. I don’t have a clue as to how to take the amp out of my car though. Also, once I send the amp to you, how long will it take to repair and send back to me?

After reading this page, I’ve gathered both my ASK unit and Logic7 (L7) amp are broken. L7 is adjustable in iDrive. It’s not a MOST issue because all chimes, parking sensor and Navi systems function.
Initially, my 02 745 w/ L7 right front door started popping. After several months, both subs under seat stopped working (first one, then the other).
Currently, front right speaker continues to pop and both subs are out. How do you suggest I fix this?

Hi, I have a 2003 bmw 745li. I initially bought the car and speakers seemed to be working fine. one week later i noticed that my driver side door speakers were not working neither of the 2. Now my issue is All the speakers in the rear have a cracking sound going and the only speakers that work are the one in front on top of dash and the front passenger door speakers work. Question? When i bought my 2004 bmw 745li the radio and navi didnt work. After i inspected everything i noticed my logic 7 amp was missing. I bought a bus jumper to plug into the amp fiber optic wire. I know you can bypass the amp if its bad with a jumper but can you do it if the physical amp isnt even there? Another question is do you have to have the most bus jumper in the glove box for everthing to work because that was also missing when i got the car.

I have a 2006 750li. I’ve only had it about 3 weeks. Everything works (NAVI, radio, key chime, Idrive) but immediately noticed a crackling from the rear passenger door mid. I called the seller who sent me to the audio shop they previously took it too. They had no clue, said the speakers were bad so Their fix was to unplug the passenger seat sub. I was shocked. So I plugged it back in but found it pops and cracks and growls. I felt it was the AMP based in what Ive read, so I bought a used AMP and everything worked perfectly for a day, no hissing popping or crackling anywhere, but it lost all adjustments in the equalizer. I took it back for a 2nd used one that didnt work any better than the original one did; same crackling and popping. I broke down and bought a new OEM never used AMP still im the dealer box off eBay but after putting it in the passenger seat sub works fine, but now the drivers seat sub and sometimes the drivers door mid crackles and pops instead, as did the other side originally which now works fine. I have an appt with the BMW dealer next week but am frustrated and mad because I’m wasting money and time; could the new one be bad too? Please Help?

Hi, I have a 2003 730d, i believe its the standard ASK unit with 6 speakers. My radio works fine, my Nav, Parking beepers voice commands etc work perfectly but i get no sound when i insert a CD player in. If i start the car and insert a CD i get severe crackling and then that dies out. Any ideas? Took it to auto tronics and he changed the laser but still the same.

Not sure what the problem is but people say it’s the AMP but it appears that everything works fine… Just no bass anymore.
It seems like if I hit a bump or make a turn sometimes it comes back on and I fall in love with Logic7 again. It sounds so good.. but a few minutes later, if I try to raise the volume or ?hit another bump?, it goes off again. I always thought it was a loose wire but everyone has been telling me it’s the AMP.
If it is, and if I would like you to repair it, is removing/reinstalling it fairly easy?

I have a 2006 BMW 750i and recently I noticed that my rear speakers (above the back seats) and the front right top speaker is not working. There is also no beeping sound from the parking sensors (the only beeping I hear is from the left front side by the driver)…I assume the parking unit is connected to these speakers only and somehow they have failed…any suggestions?

In my 06 750i I noticed the drivers’ under seat sub was not producing bass and just crackling and farting. I unplugged the sub and the sounds have stopped but obviously with no bass from one side of the car I’d like to remedy the situation ASAP. There was no visible damage to the sub, it just stopped working one day after playing a couple songs at max volume. I was going to assume the sub was blown but after reading this have to give getting an amp rebuild a second thought. I feel as if the sound could be more crisp and think the amp is definitely on its way out. How long does it take to get it rebuilt from when you receive it til its out the door?

Everything is working fine except I have no bass and the logic 7 is not adjustable. I will get occasional, maybe every few weeks, pops or the display will blank and logic 7 is adjustable and the goes back to unadjustable within a few seconds. I checked the red lights in the bus system and they are all on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi there…. I have a 2008 335i with the logic 7 system. I recently accidentally had some water get into my amplifier in trunk. I dried it out and worked ok for awhile but then started acting up.
It plays but not deep bass and sounds like rear speaker blown but from what I see in your posts it is probably not the speaker and just the amp.
I took the amp out yesterday and tried cleaning it up with some corrosion x spray but it is still messed up. Is something that you guys can fix? Please let me know …thank you!!

You seem to know everything about the Logic 7 system. Which is great! I have an ’02 745i I purchased recently from the 2nd owner. They were told by the dealer that the amp is bad. I don’t doubt it, but everything is available onscreen including adjustments, except the Navi. It does not come on at all. Does this mean the Navi is bad too? And how can I check it to find out? Some sound from front speakers only. You mentioned that the amp is programmed to the vin. The date stamp on the amp is 2005. Will repairing the amp fix everything? Thanks.
yes navi is bad too if you still getting sound from front dpeakers. amo needs repair
Hi my name is Andrey and I have a 2003 BMW 760 with a logic 7 sound system at first I had a problem the stereo was not working at all so after doing some tests I found out that my phone module was not working because after I bypass it with the fiber optic loop everything comes back and works fine but I have no base and I can’t control my logic level so could it be possible that the amp is also bad and can it be repaired. If its something you guys can repair what’s going to be the cost and how long will it take to have it fixed properly please let me know as soon as possible

I have a problem with my radio, I tried hard to find info. on different sites but failed… I believe you can point me into right direction.
Everything works fine in my car’s infotainment system (SVS, TV, DVD, NAVI, CD, Tape, PDC) EXCEPT RADIO! both AM & FM sounds static, I can see the memorized channels on screen and change them but no sound except static…. what could be the problem? I have no tints on the rear glass, the antenna lines look fine… please help

most likely you radio tuner module in the rear c pillar driver side, if you have hd tuner then it is in the back
Hi I have a 2006 750 lo when I put the volume up all the way I hear crackling sound in my rear deck speakers sometimes in front drive side and also my rear sensor parking system sound “beep beep beep” sound used to be loud , now I can barely hear it and only on the passenger rear….any suggestion on what the problem might be or how to diagnose the faulty unit?

My car is BMW 2006 330i . Few months back , display started showing “BMW” splash screen. I noticed that when I turn on the iginition , idrive works fine meaning display and all controls but Sound stopped working. After engine is ON, nothing works in the screen and it shows “BMW” screen. I took to a BMW independent service center and they removed the Logic7 ( as it was short circuiting the bus) and then I could use all the controls in the idrive screen. However, after 30 days again, “BMW” splash screen started showing up. I took to the BMW center and this time they asked to replace the CCC and the logic7. I have logic7 taken out and have tried multiple times the computer reset using volume + eject button, but of no use. Let me know if you have any idea or suggestion here.
yes you need another CCC unit, they go bad often
Hello I Have 2004 bmw 645ci smg and sometimes my nevagation radio works and some times is dose. Not also it makes the heater comes on and off also the mph drops to zero so sometimes. I’m not ever sure how fast I’m going than all of a sudden it pops back on what do I do please help

You might have already answered this in a previous comment but i pretty have the normal issues of the logic7 failure like subs dont work, speakers are very tinny and they get worse sounding the longer the radio is on, rear pass door speaker is not working. I can adjust the logic 7 from the menu, there is no fault codes and when on for a little while the unit gets up to about 120 degrees according to my diagnostic scanner. It seems that the main difference is that the NAV just shows a blank screen, and Nav DVD player has no power light on. My first question is, is the AMP bad or should i figure out the nav problem because that might be causing the logic7 amp to act funny or is the amp causing the NAV to act funny, or is it 2 problems? My second question is, if i have you fix the amp will the speakers work fine without the nav? Thanks for your help
first check if navi unit gets 12V, and if it does, it means its bad
I have a 2003 BMW 745I with logic system. I have just a question about the speakers in the rear doors. When I play certain music it screeches or sounds terrible only from the that location. I sent you my amp last year and you fixed it :). My question do I have to fix my ask unit now as well? Everything else works fine just the speakers in the rear doors sounds staticy.

it wil work as is, but bmw recommends coding since glitches are possible
I have a 2006 750i which I purchase from someone my Bluetooth module was missing which I replace . The problem is my radio or nothing comes on I did notice another component is missing from the very back which could be the tuner don’t rightfully know what goes there it has a two prong plug and optic fiber connector but anyway I have tried using the loop but cant get radio stations on display or no sound of any kind would u please advise thanks.
you need to find out where the signal is lost, you need to get red light in the end of the loop -glovebox last enpoint

I have a 2006 760i and when I turn up my volume it sounds like there is a speaker blown under the passage seat. I feel that the total sound is not as crisp or powerful than it should be, could this just be a blown sub or an amp issue. Thanks

Hi I have a 2004 730d. The I drive seems to be in a permanent booting loop. Nothing on the most bus works and as far as I can tell there is a flashing red light from each module connector. A BMW dealer advised it was a faulty ask unit. Does this sound feasible and is a repair possible?
ask unit is the last in the loop, so if red light gets to the ask unit but after ask nit in the glovebx you see no red light, it means ask unit is bad and not even fixable-cpu died
My navigation screen is black my ask unit will take a cd and eject one but no sound. Ive jumped everything in the trunk but still nothing can you help me?
you should not just jump it, you need to get red light in the glovebox and find which unit causes failure
Hi there, I had a Logic 7 Failure causing MOST bus problems, Intermittent sound and crackle on all outputs like PDC, phone etc… Once I bypassed the Logic 7 Amp all was fine.
I sent it for repair to a guy in Germany as I though it would be easier than sending to the States (I’m in England) but he said he couldn’t repair it, here’s his explanation:
“At the amp the main chip was overheated!
we tried reprogram him, but unfortunately without success!
Amplifier is irreparable because main chip is unchangeable.”
So first thing, would it still be worth sending to you for repair?
Second: how does the amp part cause most bus failure? I get how it would impact sound on the outputs but would it cause most bus failure?
Thirdly, if I buy another, what can I do to prevent the unit from overheating if that is indeed the case.
Interestingly, at one point while it had failed everything just worked properly for a few miles and then it failed again as before.
Also, does everything have to go through ebay? I’m aware that they charge you quite a bit, so if you think you can repair can you please send me a message?
no, probably its gone, you need another amp. we have 2 left with warranty
Also, I’m confused about the Logic 7 adjustment thing. Even now with the amp removed and bypassed I can go in the menu and adjust the Logic 7 though of course this doesn’t affect anything as the amp is gone.
yes you are correct from 2004 they changed software, so you can adjust L7 without amp at all..
I have a 2004 745li with logic 7. Every once in a while my stereo cuts out with just static and popping noise. After my car is parked and turned off it goes back bat to some what normal. I’ve noticed the sound is really not that good. My 2007 328ix sound system sounds much, much better.

yes, one of your units is bad causing MOST bus failure, you need to troubleshoot it
08 alpina b7. Front mids sound blown rear deck mids sound blown and no audio in right rear door? Thought it was just blown speakers in the front and rear but after reading up sounds like it might be the ask and the logic 7 amp.
both units need rebuilt, its quite common.

I have a 2007 750li with logic 7 never had an issue but today I hopped in the car turned it on and had no sound from the front speakers and the front center speaker in the dash was making a hissing buzzing noise and when I turned the volume up it would pop I had a little sound from the rear speakers but nothing up front. I turned the car off when I got home then turned it back on and everything works fine. I was wondering what this could be indicating, could the radio be starting to fail since none of the front speakers were working?

I have a 2004 BMW 745Li. It has a SOS Malfunction message. This has knocked out all sound and most functions in the iDrive. The screen mostly works but even this sometimes turns white. The back up sensor does visually work but no sound on anything. Since I’m a female, BMW repair treats me like I’m an idiot. They were asking for several thousand to replace the “brain” unit of the fiber optic system. Have you seen this? Is this something you fix?

My 2005 BMW 745i cracking in all speakers, just before I replaced battery radio went out…now nav, camera, radio, cd and dvd will not work….screen comes on but nothing works and L7 does not move when I try and adjust it….also gives me an SOS malfunction…Air bag light and Seatbelt light stay on…may be coincidental but most happend when my battery went dead….had it replaced and registered but still issues are beyond minute.

One day my speakers started to have crackles and the bass would come on and off. 3 weeks ago the bass finally quit working but speakers are working and can adjust Logic 7 in settings. I think that it is the amp after reading the articles here. A concern that I have is if it will need to be reprogrammed to the car once it is fixed or is it plug and play? A technician told me that if I bought a new one from BMW they would need to reprogram it. Need it fixed. Hope you could help. Need details. Thank you.

Just yesterday i noticed woofers that have stopped working. All other door speakers are working fine.
Reading Q&As in the segment here gave me a vague hint that its most probably the amplifier that has failed. But im still not sure.
I tried adjusting the EQ in the menu but it stays fixated at default mid level.
Also if i go to ‘LOGIC7’ option in the menu to adjust its value, it wudnt move either way. Everything else (Bass, treble, fader etc) is working fine.

Ok, read it all, now here’s MY issue- just bought 04 e60 545i- no nav, no pdc, has L7, no radio audio, no chirp confirmation tho yes is selected, no seat belt or key chime, i drive works fine, can tune stations and view in display, mute icon always displayed, sos sword always comes on at first after starting car… i suspected L7 amp, so I swapped in my perfect L7 amp from my 07 335i and still nothing, so I tried e60 amp in 335i and it worked perfectly, so it’s NOT the amp… red lite on optic cable in 335i at amp, but no red lite on cable at amp on e60… There is also a changer in glove box that doesn’t respond, nor does the ask cd respond. There are no blown fuses for any of these components…
on a side note, the car seems to have had a big system in it at one point- 4 pairs of wires still spliced into amp harness, and 2 random blue wires come thru from back seat area into trunk, apparently turn on leads added from head unit running back…

I have a 2007 750Li and I have no Bass coming from my subs under my seats but I can adjust the L7 from the menu. I can hear all the speakers working in my car except for the subs. How can I test to see if the subs are getting a signal from the amp? What is usually the issue that causes the subs to go out? Please help I need bass again.

I have a 2007 750 LI and sound went dead this week. Prior to that the passengers side speaker was out and was continually having static coming through it. Now there is no sound from any speakers, cd is grayed out on menu screen, navigation screen doesn’t come up, and no chimes and no parking assist sound or display.

Is it a common problem to Rolls Royce Phantom coupe as well. I figured out I have the same sound system. Stereo makes crackling noises regardless of the input.
